SMART Leadership for Teachers - Page 2

Dr. Harry concluded population sampling by reading a children's book, 100 Hungry Ants and distributing samples of ant candy.

Sarah Zarzo, elementary principal at the American School of Las Palmas, wowed the group with an enthusiastic presentation on a design-redesign technology activity focusing on Las Palmas children's preparation and sale of popcorn.

She displayed Las Palmas children's data on their popcorn project.

Sarah divided the SMART group into 3 teams. This team is engaged in developing a numerical assessment strategy for measuring the quality of popcorn.

This team is considering packaging the popcorn for sale; developing the best popcorn package from one sheet of paper and cellophane tape.

This is the popper team—experimentally testing the efficiency of an air popper.

Popcorn teams then share their findings with other teams. Here the relative merits of variable packaging are described.

Another team spokesperson presents the findings of the air popper investigation.

Amy Mechling displays a simulated moth environment and challenges participants to count numbers and colors of moths during a quick 10 second display.

Dr. Ken Mechling introduces the parachute activity.

He models the construction of a parachute with a canopy made from the bottom of a food market plastic bag, 4 string shroud lines, and a large paper clip.
